The Kerala Assembly witnessed a heated political clash on Tuesday over the issue of rising inflation, as the ruling and opposition parties locked horns during a debate on a suspension motion brought by the opposition. The discussion, which centered on the increasing prices of fuel and essential commodities, escalated tensions within the assembly. Dissatisfied with the government’s response, the opposition staged a walkout in protest. Amidst the uproar, Chief Minister VD Satheesan announced plans to release a white paper detailing the state’s economic condition soon.
During the debate, the opposition criticized the government’s policies, arguing that the surge in inflation has become a significant challenge for ordinary citizens. They accused the government of failing to take adequate measures to alleviate the burden of continuously rising fuel prices. The opposition highlighted that the cost of petrol and diesel is directly impacting the prices of everyday goods, imposing additional financial pressure on the public, and demanded immediate and effective actions from the government.
Opposition leaders elaborated on the impact of global conditions and international events on the fuel market, asserting that rising prices are increasing transportation costs, thereby affecting the prices of goods in the market. The debate also touched upon changes in fuel pricing systems over the years, with the opposition calling for policy reviews at both central and state levels to address the issue.
Expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s stance, opposition parties recorded their protest by walking out of the assembly. They argued that a more comprehensive and serious discussion on inflation, a matter of great public interest, was necessary, and accused the government of not showing enough urgency on the matter.
In response, Chief Minister VD Satheesan acknowledged the economic challenges posed by rising fuel prices and global instability. He rejected the opposition’s claim that the government was inactive, stating that efforts were ongoing to monitor and address inflation and the availability of essential goods. Satheesan also announced the forthcoming white paper, which aims to provide detailed insights into the state’s financial status, revenue aspects, and economic challenges, allowing the public and political parties to better understand the situation. Additionally, he hinted at considering tax relief on fuel, although no final decision has been made yet, as the government seeks to balance economic stability with public relief.
