In a significant move to enhance economic ties, India and Canada have launched a joint trade and investment platform aimed at fostering direct dialogue among business communities and encouraging new investment opportunities. A joint statement released on Friday described this initiative as a crucial step towards bringing the industries of both nations closer, thereby strengthening long-term business partnerships.
The announcement follows Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal’s official visit to Canada from May 25 to 27, during which he engaged in discussions with major industry representatives and business organizations. A key bilateral meeting with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, also took place, focusing on trade, investment, and economic cooperation between the two countries.
According to the joint statement, the new trade and investment platform will serve as a shared space for Indian and Canadian business leaders. Its primary goal is to identify new business opportunities, promote investments, and further consolidate commercial relations. Officials believe that regular dialogue and direct contact will accelerate business activities and open up collaboration opportunities in new sectors.
Both countries have agreed not only to enhance business cooperation but also to improve people-to-people connectivity. This includes facilitating business travel, encouraging the movement of professionals, and strengthening direct business relationships. Such measures are expected to create a favorable environment for investment and business expansion.
During the discussions, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which is considered pivotal for the economic ties between the two nations. This agreement could potentially improve market access, strengthen supply chains, and increase investment flows. The two countries aim to advance discussions and finalize the agreement by the end of the year, potentially reducing trade barriers and creating new economic opportunities.
Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, also announced plans to lead a special trade delegation to India by the end of the year. This mission aims to connect Canadian companies with the Indian market and broaden collaboration between the industries of both nations. Experts believe these recent initiatives will strengthen economic relations between India and Canada, paving the way for new cooperation opportunities in investment, manufacturing, technology, and other sectors. Both governments are keen on making business dialogues more active in the coming times.
